“Read a book” video

The other day I got an email from a fellow church member (and possible relative) about a video that was (and maybe still is) being shown on BET called “Read a book”. Now when I read the email I was kind of thrown because I hadn’t seen the video but after seeing it I was actually 50/50 on all the noise being made. Let me give a short description of the video. It takes place in a school in the ghetto (or hood) and it is about reading books. Now the music is set to Beethovan’s 5th Symphony with a hip-hop beat. The main line is “Read a book ya’ll, read a Motherf*ckin book”.

The video is an animation that has booty shakin’, gun clappin and all that stuff that mainstream america identifies with as well as what most of our younger african american rappers talk about. But I could not help but to think about a couple of weeks ago while watching TLC, Discovery or one of those stations a commercial came on for rap videos on On-Demand on Comcast. That video has no faces but the characters are all draped in flashy jewlery and the letters have jewels in them. I mean you have to see it. When I did the first thing out of my mouth was “That is sad”. I thought to myself…this is how they see us? This is how we want to be seen? Now in my mind I was thinking it had to be a white person that though of that but then I wouldn’t be surprised if a black person was behind it.

Now after seeing this “Read a book” video I thought this is the image that is mainstream today. But today while discussing the long email string about this video I could help but to think about some of the videos in my teen years that was so big for us. Videos like Rump Shaker or Bump & Grind

Now here is the video that I first got introduced to the grinding and butt shaking was Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up”. I will never forget the part of the video when she dropped down and flapped (or shall I say spreaded) her legs. Here I am in the eatery with all these other GI’s and every last guy in the place screamed. Check it out:

So in a way the video didn’t really upset me but it made me realize that I have a job to do. And that job is share my story and empower our children to realize that there is more to life than the images that they see today. Help them to understand that what they do today will follow them tomorrow. Show them that I do LOVE them and I do care. Give them a shoulder to cry on and a ear to listen when they need to talk.

Here is the “Read a book” video…judge for yourself….

I will try to make this short…After discovering that computers was a place where I felt like I was at home I have had the opportunity to work in some of the biggest companies and with some of the best people. But I have also learn and developed my superhero skills too. As we move forward in this venture I will share with you my opinions on world issues, work-life, home-life, being married, being single, no tellin what I might say.

I will also introduce you to some of my arch enemies. These people have given me some of my greatest challenges as a person and superhero. So sit back and enjoy the all new adventures of…

“THE BLLLLAAAACCCCKKKK WARRRRIIIOOORRR”

Michael Vick goes to the dogs…

Now being a superhero we don’t have a chance to talk about world events and in most cases no one ever wonders what we think or how we feel about world events but since all is quiet in my corridor of crime fightingdom I will take a minute to share my feelings on a HOT TOPIC of discussion…Michael Vick.

Now let me start by saying this superhero is a DIE HARD Dallas Cowboys fan so don’t ask me anything about Mr. Vick on the field. But what I have heard about him and his antics makes me frown on him. I don’t know if it is for the cameras or if he truely feels the way he acts…Bitter and Angry but it doesn’t matter because now he has to deal with this particular incident and deal with it face to face.

Many will argue you down about whether he is really guilty or not. As for me there is something inside that says he may not be as guilty as he has all of america believing. But one thing is for sure he was guilty the day it was announced the FEDS got him on dog fighting charges. Personally I think he took the hit to save somebody else from a bigger and much worst consequence. Who do you ask? His brother Marcus of course. According to my research I have found the following information on him:

2004: suspension for multiple unlawful incidents

Prior to the 2004 collegiate season, Vick was arrested and ultimately convicted for providing alcohol to three underage girls who “claimed” to be college students. In a subsequent incident, Vick was charged with reckless driving and possession of marijuana. He was suspended from the university for the fall semester of 2004

The 2005 season, however, saw more controversy surrounding Vick. On October 1, 2005, Vick angered fans and press in Morgantown, West Virginia with a display of his middle finger to the crowd during the game at West Virginia University. Vick later apologized and made no further comments. He also was pushed into a West Virginia University assistant coach while coming back onto the playing field after being run out of bounds. This incident was caught on film and played on ESPN later.

During the 2006 Gator Bowl on January 2, 2006, Vick once again courted controversy when he violently stomped on the leg of University of Louisville defensive end Elvis Dumervil with his foot. Following the game Vick claimed the incident was accidental and asserted he apologized to Dumervil after the game.

Additional traffic arrests

Vick had lost his privilege to drive a motor vehicle in Virginia as the result of multiple traffic convictions, including reckless driving. On December 17, 2005, he was charged in Hampton, Virginia with speeding, and for the second time, with the more serious misdemeanor charge of driving on a suspended or revoked license.

Dismissal from Virginia TechIn 24 career games at Virginia Tech, Vick threw for 2,868 yards, 19 touchdowns and 15 interceptions while also running 184 times for 492 yards and six touchdowns. However, during the same period, he was charged with nine traffic offenses, as well as convictions for possession of marijuana and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

On January 6, 2006, Virginia Tech announced his permanent dismissal from its football program “due to a cumulative effect of legal infractions and unsportsmanlike play.”

In response to being thrown off the team, Vick has been quoted as saying, “It’s not a big deal. I’ll just move on to the next level, baby.”

More non-driving legal troubles

Within three days of expulsion from Virginia Tech, Marcus Vick became involved in another incident resulting in criminal charges, this time back home in Hampton Roads. The result in court was yet another misdemeanor conviction, but only suspended jail time. He also subsequently became the target of a civil lawsuit which had not been resolved as of June 8, 2007.

Criminal charges, conviction in Suffolk, Virginia

On January 9, 2006, he was charged with three counts of brandishing a firearm, a Class One misdemeanor , in Suffolk, Virginia. A police report stated that he allegedly pointed a gun at a 17-year-old and at least two of his friends in the parking lot of a McDonald’s restaurant in the 6200 block of Town Point Road in Suffolk. After Vick’s girlfriend had an argument with three people, they claimed that Vick pointed a gun at them. Vick claimed that the “gun” in question was actually a BlackBerry cell phone that was mistaken for a gun and that his accusers were trying to blackmail him.

Civil lawsuit, fraud and sex with minor

On December 14, 2006, a 17-year old girl from Montgomery County, Virginia, filed a civil lawsuit against Marcus Vick accusing him of sexual battery upon a minor, fraud, and additional charges. In the lawsuit, seeking $6.3 million, an unnamed girl claims that when she was 15 (below the legal age of consent in Virginia) and was student in high school, she engaged in a sexual relationship with Vick, who was 20 years old, over a nearly two year long period. She also alleges Vick offered to provide her alcohol and marijuana and asked her to have sex with other men.

Is that enough??? Now from the way it seems Marcus was a train wreck waiting to happen because he could not deal with the fame that was coming at him. But Michael being the big brother (and probably raised to always have his brothers back) took the hit to protect him. Don’t get me wrong…I aplaud Michael for being the stand-up big brother because I am one myself. But there does come a time when the littl brother has to stand up and be accountable for his actions. It is hard enough keeping one’s self in check but to have to keep a sibling in check???? Come on!

The way it sounds Michael has basically thrown all his hard work to get where he is in the garbage. Now who is going to stand up for him? Now begins the finger-pointing tell all part of the case.

As for this hero…here is another tragic Afor-American story gone bad. Now almost any black athlete or aspiring young black athlete is going to be watched even more. Like they say “You can take the boy out of the hood but, you can’t take the hood out of the boy“!
